10 Questions to ask your Wedding Photographer
Planning a wedding is a beautiful journey, and I’m so honored that you’re considering me to capture a day that is so full of love and life. As your photographer, my heart is to serve you—not just by taking beautiful photos, but by truly seeing and celebrating your unique story.
I believe that finding the right photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. It’s about more than just a portfolio; it’s about choosing someone you trust to document your day and who feels more like a friend than a vendor. That’s why I’ve compiled these 10 essential questions to help you get to the heart of what matters when choosing a photographer.
1. What is your photography style and can I see full wedding galleries?
Every photographer has a unique artistic vision. Some focus on a documentary style, capturing moments as they unfold, while others specialize in editorial portraiture. Most photographers, including myself, blend multiple styles to give you a complete story.
This is the most important question you can ask, because what you see is what you might not get. Always ask to see complete wedding galleries, not just the highlights. This allows you to see how a photographer handles different lighting conditions, venues, and the entire flow of a wedding day, from getting ready to the last dance.
My Approach: My style is best described as joyful, authentic, and light-centered. I’m all about capturing genuine emotions and creating images that are a true artistic journey of your day. I blend documentary storytelling with editorial portraits to create a unique collection of photos that feel as dreamy as the day itself. Short answer: Yes, you can definitely ask to see full galleries!
2. What’s included in your wedding photography packages?
Wedding photography packages vary significantly. Some offer basic coverage, while others include engagement sessions, albums, or a second photographer. Knowing exactly what’s included from the start will help you avoid surprises and ensure you’re comparing offerings accurately.
My Approach: My collections are thoughtfully designed to provide you with everything you need for a custom, seamless experience. Every collection includes one-of-a-kind imagery delivered in a digital gallery with a signature photo album designed to your timeline. Variations include different hours of coverage, number of professional photographers (second shooter), nostalgic film add ons like Super 8 video, and even a fun portrait station for your guests.
3. Do you work with a Second Photographer?
For larger weddings or venues with multiple locations, a second photographer is invaluable. They can capture different angles during the ceremony, get behind-the-scenes moments while the main photographer is with you, dedicate their time to one partner during getting ready, and ensure every detail and candid is documented during cocktail hour while portraits are happening.
My Approach: For my largest collections, I always include a second professional photographer. This ensures we can capture every special moment from multiple perspectives without missing a beat, from your partner’s reaction as you walk down the aisle to the emotional moments of both of your getting-ready experiences.
4. How do you create and manage a wedding day timeline?
An experienced wedding photographer should be able to help you create a timeline that allows for beautiful photos while ensuring you still have plenty of time to enjoy your celebration. This question helps you understand their planning process and how they prioritize your experience.
My Approach: Your wedding day should be spent on what matters most to you. My timeline planning process starts with a conversation about your priorities, and I then create a custom timeline that is both rooted in your story and flexible to the day’s memories. My goal is to protect your time for meaningful moments and ensure you feel fully present throughout the day.

5. What is your backup plan for unpredictable weather?
No matter where you get married, weather can be unpredictable. Asking about a photographer’s experience in various conditions—from a rainy day to harsh sun—will show you their preparedness and ability to adapt.
My Approach: I am always prepared for anything Mother Nature throws our way. I bring weather-appropriate gear, and I’ll work with your point person to scout indoor alternatives for portraits if needed, ensuring we can create beautiful images regardless of the weather. My goal is to make the very best of any situation so you can simply focus on each other.
6. Do you charge travel fees?
If you are planning a destination wedding, it’s important to understand a photographer’s travel policy. Ask about any additional travel fees, accommodation requirements for distant locations, and if they have a radius within which travel is included in their standard packages.
My Approach: I am a lover of travel and adventure! My packages include a large travel radius in Colorado, plus I offer affordable, transparent travel rates for a destination wedding outside of Colorado with no hidden fees. I’m always up for the adventure of capturing love in a new place!
7. When will we receive our wedding photos?
Understanding the delivery timeline and process is crucial. Ask about the expected turnaround time, how many images you’ll receive, and in what format they’ll be delivered.
My Approach: It’s so important to me to get all your files safely stored and settled. I deliver a large sneak peek gallery within 1 week of your wedding so you can delight in hand-edited photos. Your full, high-resolution gallery will be delivered within 2 months via an online, downloadable gallery that you can easily share with friends and family. My most premium package also includes same day prints and edits which is always a great hit!
8. What backup systems do you have for our photos?
Image security should be a top priority for any professional photographer. Ask about their backup systems during the wedding (e.g., shooting on dual memory cards) and afterward (e.g., storage redundancy on multiple devices).
My Approach: I protect your memories through multiple layers of processes. I shoot with two memory cards in my two cameras (and multiple lenses and lighting equipment) at all times, and as soon as I get home, your cards are secured in their own heavy-duty container where they’ll get backed up in multiple ways on my computer as soon as possible. Your memories are safe with me.
I have my own dedicated IT specialist for the very RARE chance that there are file issues. I think it’s important to be prepared to handle the worst case scenario. For example, if I can’t make it to your wedding because of an Act of God circumstance, I have a large network of professional photographers due to owning an established photography studio that I can call. That’s also the beauty of already having a second shooter who knows the plan.
9. What is your contract and booking process?
Understanding the booking process helps set clear expectations. Ask about retainer amounts, payment schedules, and what’s required to officially secure your date.
My Approach: To officially book your wedding date, I require a signed contract and a $500 non-refundable retainer. The remaining balance is divided into two payments, with the final one due a week after your wedding date. My contract clearly outlines deliverables, inclusions, and policies to ensure we are both protected.
10. Do you have business liability insurance?
Many venues now require vendors to provide proof of insurance. This question can save you from a major headache later in your planning process.
My Approach: Yes, I maintain comprehensive business liability insurance that meets or exceeds the requirements of all venues. I’m happy to provide a certificate of insurance to your venue upon request!
Bonus. What is your approach to engagement sessions?
An engagement session is a wonderful opportunity to work with your photographer before the wedding day, but that doesn’t always fit everyone’s need. Some photographers are rigid with their packages while others let your vision be at the heart of your custom photography proposal.
My Approach: There is so much magic in engagement sessions, boudoir photoshoots, bridal portraits, intimate day-after photos, or anything in between. The cool thing is that these additional photoshoots don’t have to be included in your wedding contract. You can add it on later! We’ll plan a fun session with a free outfit guide in a beautiful place.
