That’s why I’ve compiled these 10 essential questions to help you get to the heart of what matters when choosing a photographer.

1. What is your photography style and can I see full portrait galleries?

Every photographer has a unique artistic vision. Some focus on a documentary style, capturing moments as they unfold, while others specialize in editorial portraiture. Most photographers, including myself, blend multiple styles to give you a complete story.

This is the most important question you can ask, because what you see is what you might not get. Always ask to see complete galleries, not just the highlights. This allows you to see how a photographer handles different lighting conditions, locations, and the entire flow of a session, from those first few poses to the last.

My Approach: My style is best described as joyful, authentic, and light-centered. I’m all about capturing genuine emotions and creating images that are a true artistic journey of your day. 2. What’s included in your portrait photography packages?

Professional photography packages vary significantly. Some offer basic coverage, while others include prints, albums, or more add-ons. Knowing exactly what’s included from the start will help you avoid surprises and ensure you’re comparing offerings accurately.

My Approach: My collections are thoughtfully designed to provide you with everything you need for a custom, seamless experience. I offer a variety of options that include different hours of coverage, inspirational guides and questionnaires, and the option to add on additional services like polaroids or a handcrafted heirloom album.

3. Do you have past client testimonies?

Almost as important as the photos themselves, the experience will make or break how you feel and show up in front of the camera. Check the reviews of professionals to make sure they have a positive presence and reliable communication.

My Approach: My planning process starts with a conversation about your priorities which guides us into outfit ideas, pose ideation, and exclusive location options. We create an experience that is both rooted in your story and flexible to the day’s lighting and weather. My goal is for you to show up knowing that I’ve got you covered.

5. What is your backup plan for unpredictable weather?

Colorado is Colorado; weather can be unpredictable. Asking about a photographer’s experience in various conditions—from a rainy day to harsh sun—will show you their preparedness and ability to adapt.

My Approach: I am always prepared for anything Mother Nature throws our way. I bring weather-appropriate gear, get creative with my settings, and give you prompts to have fun in the rain if you’re down for a new vision. Overall though, rescheduling is included my contracts, plus I own a local photo studio if we need to pivot to inside.

6. Do you charge travel fees?

If you are planning a mountain destination, it’s important to understand a photographer’s travel policy. Ask about any additional travel fees and if they have a radius within which travel is included in their standard packages.

My Approach: I am a lover of travel and adventure! My packages offer an affordable rate for all of Colorado, at only 33 cents/mile. For any destinations beyond that, I offer transparent travel rates with no hidden fees. I’m always up for the adventure of capturing stories in a new place!

7. When will we receive our photos?

Understanding the delivery timeline and process is crucial. Ask about the expected turnaround time, how many images you’ll receive, and in what format they’ll be delivered.

My Approach: It’s so important to me to get all your files safely stored and settled. I deliver a sneak peek gallery within 1 week of your session so you can delight in hand-edited photos. Your full, high-resolution gallery will be delivered within 1 month via an online, downloadable gallery that you can easily share with friends and family.

8. What backup systems do you have for our photos?

Image security should be a top priority for any professional photographer. Ask about their backup systems during the photoshoot and afterward.

My Approach: I protect your memories through multiple layers of redundancy. I come with multiple memory cards, batteries, cameras, and lenses, and as soon as I get home, your cards are secured in their own heavy-duty container where they’ll get backed up in multiple ways on my computer as soon as possible. Your memories are safe with me.

9. What is your contract and booking process?

Understanding the booking process helps set clear expectations. Ask about retainer amounts, payment schedules, and what’s required to officially secure your date.

My Approach: To officially book your session date, I require a signed contract and a $100 non-refundable retainer. The remaining balance is due a week after your session date. My contract clearly outlines deliverables, inclusions, and policies to ensure we are both protected.

10. Do you have business liability insurance?

Many public locations now require vendors to provide proof of insurance. This question can save you from a major headache later in your planning process.

My Approach: Yes, I maintain comprehensive business liability insurance that meets or exceeds the requirements of all venues. I’m happy to provide a certificate of insurance to your venue upon request.
